According to Russian sources, both presidents will discuss deeper bilateral cooperation in political, economic, cultural and humanitarian fields and integration cooperation in the Eurasian region. Armenia became full member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) on January 2, 2015.

Armenia joined EEU when Russia and Kazkahstan were facing economical crises due to meltdown of oil prices and Armenia had an option to go for signing the Association Agreement with the European Union but it stood with Russia and joined EEU instead of moving towards Europe like Ukraine. The decision on Armenia’s joining the Customs Union was announced by the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan on 03 September 2013. Russian President Putin considers Armenia as his “one of the closet friend” and signed 12 agreements on enhancing cooperation in security, economy, energy, tourism and education in December 2013. Russia also reduced the gas price for Armenia from 270 to 189 dollars per 1,000 cubic meters and enlarged the existing Russian military bases in Armenia.

Russian relation with Armenia are very important for Yerevan because of its conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh. Russian–Armenian interaction in military affairs has increased since Putin staibilised Russian economy in last one decade the 102nd Russian military base is stationed in the territory of Armenia. United Russian–Armenian troop groups are formed and FSB of Russia in Armenia together with the Armenian frontier-guards bears the protection of the boundaries of Armenia with Turkey and Iran.

Diplomatic relations between modern-day Armenia and Russia were established on April 3, 1992 but reached a new height after Vladimir Putin took the charge of Russian politics.
