KARACHI, Pakistan: The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif has approved an increase in military courts for Karachi to handle outstanding terror cases, according to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

As many as nine military courts have already been established across the country under the national plan of action against terrorism.

The approval for more military courts in Karachi was given by the COAS when he visited the Corps Headquarter in the city on Tuesday, and was given a detailed briefing on law and order and security situation in Karachi by the Corps Commander Lt General Naveed Mukhtar.

In a series of tweets, the Director General ISPR Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa told that the COAS commended all ranks of the Rangers, police, intelligence agencies and the people of Karachi for their support on the occasion.

“The operation in Karachi will continue to eliminate terrorists, criminals and mafias from the metropolis,” the COAS said according to Bajwa.

The army chief issued directives to break the nexus between terrorists, criminal mafias and corruption in order to ensure a peaceful and terror free Karachi.

The COAS handed over equipment worth Rs65 million to the Karachi Police which has also been given training to enhance the capacity and capability of the police force.

Earlier in the day, the COAS visited the Army Air Defense Center at Malir Cantt area of Karachi and laid floral wreath at martyrs monument.

On the occasion, the army chief was briefed about the training activities of the center which was founded in 1989.

The army chief also pinned the badges of rank on the shoulders of Lieutenant General Zamir Ul Hassan Shah, Adjutant General Pakistan Army to formally install him as Colonel Commandant of Army Air Defence.

The COAS also addressed the officers and men of the Garrison.
