ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: An amount of Rs9.1 billion has been approved for the National Health Insurance Programme and its first phase would be launched in December 2015, the Minister of State for Health Saira Afzal Tarar said.

Under the scheme, poor families will be provided with free of cost health insurance to access secondary as well as priority disease treatment without any financial obligations.

In a meeting held in Islamabad to review the progress on the National Health Insurance Programme, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was given a briefing by Saira Afzal Tarar in this regard.

The prime minister was briefed that in the first phase of the programme the poorest of the poor in 20 districts from all provinces will get the insurance cover, and eventually it will be implemented throughout the country.

Sharif directed the concerned authorities to develop a state of the art insurance system through which the poor can get medical treatment without any difficulty.
