Nawaz Sharif postpones Karachi visit till Wednesday

KARACHI, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has postponed his visit to Karachi which has witnessed over 1,200 deaths caused by devastating heatwave since last week.

   

The prime minister was scheduled to visit on Monday; however, he had to postpone it till Wednesday due to some official engagements.

During his day-long visit, the prime minister was to preside over a high-level meeting at which various issues including the law and order situation, current heatwave as well as matters pertaining to the K-Electric and water supply situation were to be discussed.

The prime minister was also expected to visit patients of heatstroke in local a hospital.

A total of 1,306 deaths in Sindh including 1,214 in Karachi alone have been reported because of heatstroke since March 20.

On Sunday, several Sindh ministers visited various hospitals and blamed prolonged power outages in Karachi for over 1,200 deaths.

The provincial Health Minister Jam Mehtab Dahar said while talking to media at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre that half of those who lost their lives due to heatwave could have been saved if had the prolonged power outages not carried out.
