Nawaz Sharif orders thorough probe into BBC report on MQM

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has ordered a thorough probe into the allegations leveled in a BBC report against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) about its receiving funding from India.

In a meeting with the Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and his Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi in Islamabad on Thursday, the prime minister directed the interior ministry to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and submit a report as soon as possible.

During the meeting, the prime minister was apprised about the details of the BBC report.

On Wednesday in a report published by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the MQM was accused of being receiving funding from India. The report said that British officials also recovered a list of weapons from the party office when they conducted a raid there in June 2013 as part of their investigation into MQM’s alleged money laundering.

However, the MQM Coordination Committee Member Wasay Jalil rejected the BBC’s allegations, saying they had been facing such allegations since 1992.

Earlier while talking to news channel, the Federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid said that the government is examining BBC report regarding the MQM.

The minister said that the government would decide about any action only after thoroughly studying the report. He said that the Foreign Office was also examining the report.

Moscow says it won’t allow US to silence UNSC on Israeli violence against Palestinians Monitoring Desk: Russian envoy in United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said that the UN Security Council should bring peace, stability and prosperity to the Middle East and Russia would not allow United States to silence UNSC over the issue of Gaza crisis. According to TASS news Agency, Nebenzya said that Moscow will continue to call for an end to violence against Palestinians and will not allow the US to muzzle the UN Security Council as Washington seeks to support Israel's operation in Gaza. "We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation. We will not allow the Americans to gag the entire council with their hands in an effort to encourage further continuation of Israel's ruthless operation," he said in a speech at the Security Council.
