20 Indian soldiers killed in rebel attack in Manipur

NEW DELHI, India: At least 20 Indian soldiers were killed when a group of rebels ambushed a military convoy in the Chandel district of northeastern Manipur state on Thursday, in the worst attack on the Indian army in at least a decade.

The Indian media reports said that 12 solders also sustained injuries in the attack occurred when a convoy of military personnel belonging the 6 Dogra infantry regiment was on its way from Chandel district to Imphal, the Capital of Manipur state.

The reports citing an army spokesman said that the rebels fired rocket-propelled grenades at the convoy when it reached a place between Paralong and Charong villages near Motul.

The dead and injured soldiers were shifted to hospital through helicopters for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, the central security agencies said that they suspect a mixed group of militants from the Naga group NSCN (K) and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) of Manipur is involved in the attack.
