Pakistan voices concerns over new Hindu settlements in Indian-held Kashmir

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan has voiced concerns over Indian plans to set up new Hindu settlements in the occupied Kashmir, a disputed territory between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Indian government with Narendra Modi as the prime minister reportedly plans to resettle thousands of Hindus in three new townships in Muslim-dominated Kashmir.

In her weekly news briefing in Islamabad on Thursday, the Foreign Office Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said that Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory and the United Nations Security Council in its resolutions has clearly pronounced the status of the territory.

The spokesperson said that any effort to establish special towns or zones to change the demographic make-up of the territory will be in violation of UN resolutions. She said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are also resisting the Indian resettlement plans.

In reply to a question about the Yemeni conflict, Tasnim Aslam said that Pakistan is always ready to play positive and constructive role for the peaceful resolution of the issue.

The foreign office spokesperson said that Pakistan is already in contact with all the Muslim countries on the matter. She said that it is likely that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will have a meeting on the issue in the coming days.

On Wednesday, the Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz made major changes in the Kingdom’s ruling hierarchy, appointing Prince Mohammed bin Nayef as new Crown Prince and Adel al-Jubeir as new Foreign Minister.

In her remarks about the changes in Saudi cabinet, Aslam said that it is the internal matter of that country.

“Pakistan does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries,” the spokesperson said.
