Disease surveillance system launched in Punjab

LAHORE, Pakistan:  The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has launched the project of disease surveillance system under which data of 26 major diseases in 145 government hospitals throughout the province would be compiled, the PITB Chairman Dr. Umer Saif said.

In a statement on Monday, the PITB chairman said that the initiative will help in providing best treatment facilities to the masses as well as eradicating diseases.

The PITB chairman said that under the project, data of 50 lakh patients and diseases in which they are suffering has been computerized in all big and small government hospitals of 36 districts in Punjab so far.

On the basis of this data, it is known that which diseases are spreading mostly in which district, he added.

Dr. Umer said that the provincial health department besides providing medicines also takes effective protective measures with the same ratio. He added that it helps to evolve future policies and eradicate diseases.

Dr. Umer Saif said that on the basis of information, the PITB broadcast informative bulletin every week which is being sent to district coordination officers (DCOs) of all districts, the executive district officers (EDOs) health department, government hospitals, medical colleges and concerned institutions and it is also available online.

Moreover, he said that the PITB has the cooperation of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Institute of Public Health Punjab, King Edward Medical University and Health Department Punjab for this useful programme. He expressed his belief that this programme will prove to be an important milestone for purging Punjab of diseases.
