PTI to contest Senate elections from KPK

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will participate in the upcoming Senate elections from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the party’s Core Committee confirmed on Friday.

The announcement had already been made by the PTI Chairman Imran Khan regarding his party’s participation in the Senate polls while talking to media in Jeddah on January 14.

However, the PTI’s Core Committee in its meeting held in Islamabad on Friday approved the decision.

The Senate elections are scheduled to be held on March 3 during which 52 lawmakers will be elected for the 104-member upper house of the bicameral Parliament.

The PTI led by Imran Khan is currently in power in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province along with coalition partners including the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and the Awami Jamhuri Ittehad Pakistan (AJIP).

The PTI is the largest political party in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly with 56 members, the JI has eight while the AJIP has five lawmakers in the 124-member assembly.

In September last year, the representatives belonging to the PTI resigned from the National Assembly and three provincial assemblies.

However, the issue of acceptance of the PTI lawmakers’ resignations from the National assembly and the Punjab assembly remains ambiguous as only the Speaker Sindh assembly Agha Siraj Durrani formally accepted the resignations of four PTI members in the provincial assembly earlier this month.
