Pakistan has serious concern over US-India nuclear deal: FO spokesperson

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Foreign Office has said that India could use the US civil nuclear technology to make nuclear weapons which was a serious concern for Pakistan.

Talking to Radio Pakistan’s Nuqta-e-Nazar program, the Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam said that the defence and nuclear deals between India and the United States would disturb balance of power in the region.

The spokesperson said that the United States and India have also signed a defence deal regarding conventional weapons along with transfer of technology which will heighten tension in the region.

The US President Barack Obama paid a three-day official visit to India earlier this week while during talks with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, the two sides reached an agreement to break the deadlock that had been stalling a US-India civilian nuclear deal signed in 2008.

The FO spokesperson further said that it is surprising that the United States has announced support for permanent membership of India in the United Nations Security Council though New Delhi has not implemented several UN resolutions.

Earlier on Tuesday, the premier’s adviser on national security and foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz also warned that operationalization of Indo-US nuclear deal for political and economic expediencies would have a detrimental impact on deterrence stability in South Asia.

In a statement, the adviser said that Pakistan also strongly opposed the granting of any special status to India at the UN Security Council.

“A country, in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions on matters of international peace and security, such as the Jammu & Kashmir dispute, by no means qualifies for a special status in the Security Council,” the adviser said.
