SC constitutes three-member bench for death penalty cases

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa has been formed to hear the appeals of prisoners against death penalty.

The bench was constituted by the Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk on Friday.

The proceedings will take place from January 5 to January 9.

On December 17, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a six-year moratorium on death penalty for those convicted for terrorism a day after the deadly attack on army public school in Peshawar that left 150 persons mostly children killed.

Since then, seven terrorists have been hanged till death across the country after they were found guilty and sentenced to death for their involvement in various terrorist activities.

On December 24, in a meeting held in the Supreme Court with the Chief Justice in the chair, the superior judiciary decided that top priority will be given to terrorism-related cases and hearings will be conduct on a daily basis as provided in the anti-terrorism act.

The meeting was held in reference to the early disposal of cases of terrorism pending in the counter-terrorism courts.
