Federal, KPK govts fail to produce missing persons before SC

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan was assured on Wednesday that a first information report (FIR) would be lodged against army officials involved in the missing persons case.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja was hearing the case of 35 missing persons on Wednesday.

During the proceedings, the Attorney General of Pakistan Salman Butt assured the apex court that a FIR’s would lodged against army officials involved in the missing persons case. The court gave the attorney general 24 hours to lodge the FIR.

The apex court expressed its displeasure over the failure of the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments to meet the courts deadline for producing the missing persons.

The court observed that 34 hearings had been conducted in the case but authorities concerned had made no progress.

The attorney general sought an adjournment in the case, saying that they would show some progress in the matter. He informed the court the government had constituted a one-man commission headed by Justice (retd) Mian Muhammad Ajmal to trace out the missing persons.

The court was informed that the inquiry would be completed within a month, while funds would be provided to the families of missing persons.

However, Justice Khawaja remarked that the court had exercised restraint so far so that the government could make progress on the matter.

Later, the court adjourned the hearing of the case till Thursday.
