KARACHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday reviewed progress made so far on the installation of up to 10 coal-based power plants in Gadani, Balochistan involving an estimated investment of around $14-$15 billion.

The Prime Minister chaired a meeting of the Steering Committee overseeing the project which envisages setting up ten plants having capacity of 660 megawatt each.

The first plant is being planned under a government-backed company while China has given assurance to build four plants.

Foreign investors will be lured for setting up rest of the plants.

The meeting was attended by senior government ministers including Finance Minister Ishaq Dar while Chief Minister Balochistan Dr Abdul Malik Baloch was also present.

The government of Balochistan has offered 5,000 acres land on equity basis for the project.

The Prime Minister directed officials to complete the project on fast-track basis.

The ground-breaking of the first power plant is anticipated to be held in March next year, the prime minister was told in the briefing.
