ISLAMABAD: The federation of Pakistan on Wednesday submitted its reply to the Supreme Court of Pakistan vis-à-vis high treason case against former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf.
In its reply, the government has informed the Supreme Court that a special team of the FIA is being constituted which will investigate Musharraf’s due o Treason charges and take action under Article 6 of the constitution.
Although no timeframe for FIA investigations is stipulated in the reply, the government said FIA is being asked to expedite investigations as early as possible.
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court directed the Attorney General to inform the court how the government would proceed in this direction.
The latest reply was submitted in line with the Supreme Court’s directives.
On Monday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that the government would proceed ahead to try Musharraf under Article 6 of the constitution.
It may be mentioned that Musharraf, who took power in a 1999 coup, returned to Pakistan in March this year after nearly four years of self-imposed exile to contest a May 11 general election, but he was disqualified from standing because of pending court cases.
The election was won by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of Nawaz Sharif, whom Musharraf ousted in his coup 14 years ago.
Musharraf became the first former army chief to be arrested, breaking an unwritten rule that the top ranks of the military are untouchable, even after they have retired.
Musharraf is presently under house arrest at his farmhouse in near Islamabad due to cancellation of his bail in the murder ase of Nawab Akbar Bugti. Besides, treason charges and Bugti case, former military ruler is being tried in the judges’ detention case and Benazir Bhutto’s assasination case.
