NEW YORK: A 15-member delegation of the National Defense University (NDU) of Pakistan, comprising senior officers from Pakistan’s Armed Forces and Civil Service including allied officers from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia met the Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations Ambassador Munir Akram in New York.

Ambassador Munir Akram briefed the delegation about the activities of Pakistan and the United Nations in a multilateral spectrum.

Various issues particularly those relating to UN’s main three pillars: Peace and Security, Human rights, and Development came under discussion.

Ambassador Akram laid out the broad priorities of Pakistan at the United Nations in the backdrop of fast-evolving developments across the globe.

The ambassador mentioned that the key priorities of Pakistan at the United Nations are the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, peace in Afghanistan, and development and issues of Climate change.

The ambassador also highlighted Pakistan’s key initiatives and achievements at the United Nations especially in the area of Counter-terrorism, UN Peacekeeping, UN reforms, Islamophobia, and other.

He also reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to continue pursuing the resolution of the Kashmir dispute under the auspices of the United Nations Security Council resolution.

“Pakistan has always been active at the United Nations, last year Pakistan was a president of Economic and Social Council and this year Pakistani is Chairing Group of 77 and China (developing countries)” he said.

At the United Nations, it is recognized that Pakistan as G77 and OIC chair is playing an active role especially to advance the priorities of the developing countries as well as Muslim countries. One of the success stories of Pakistan is our contribution to UN peacekeeping. Our troops are held in high esteem. We are the 5th largest troop contributor in UN peacekeeping. Pakistan’s contributions to the cause of Islamophobia are another key achievement. We have been able to secure the recognition at the United Nations for the problem of Islamophobia and through OIC, a resolution on International Day of Islamophobia on March 15 was adopted.

Moreover, the area of Human Rights & Counter-Terrorism achievements and cooperation at the UN also came under discussion.

At the end of the briefing, Participants asked questions on global issues and Pakistan’s position at the United Nations.

The member of the delegation presented a shield and thanked the Ambassador for the insightful briefing

Earlier, the delegation was facilitated by Permanent Mission to visit UN Hqs.

They also took a group photograph with the Permanent Representative of Pakistan Mission, Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Aamir Khan, and other officers at the Mission.
