MONITORING DESK: The icon of the resistance movement of oppressed Kashmiris in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and veteran Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Gilani passed away in Srinagar on Wednesday evening. He was 92.

According to Kashmir Media Service (KMS), a family member of Syed Ali Gilani while talking to media also confirmed the death of the veteran pro-freedom leader.

Syed Ali Gilani had been under house arrest for the last many years. He was suffering from multiple diseases. He developed serious complications on Wednesday afternoon and breathed his last at 10:30 pm. As per reports, he had chest congestion and breathing problems.

In a condolence statement, President Dr. Arif Alvi expressing deep grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Syed Ali Shah Gilani said that Kashmir is deprived of a great leader who remained steadfast against Indian imperialism all his life.

President Arif Alvi said that Ali Gilani was a brave, courageous and sincere leader. He prayed Allah Almighty to rest the departed soul in eternal peace.

In his statement, Prime Minister Imran Khan also paid glowing tribute to late Kashmir leader for his struggle against Indian tyranny, and expressed deep sorrow over his sad demise.

Born on September 29, 1929, Syed Ali Gilani all along his life strived for the cause of freedom of Kashmir from Indian illegal occupation. He remained at the forefront of the Kashmiris’ struggle for the right to self-determination. He remained associated with the Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir for the most part of his life but later founded his own party by the name of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.

Gilani led the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) until late quitting the pro-freedom amalgam due to his worsening health condition.
