ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan has strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Afghanistan’s Kandahar City which resulted in deaths of Kandahar Governor Zalmai Wesa, the Police Chief General Abdul Raziq and the Local Intelligence Head (Terrorist attack in Kandahar).

Earlier in the day, bodyguards of Kandahar governor opened fire at the governor’s compound following a high level security meeting also attended by the Commander of the US and NATO troops in Afghanistan General Scott Miller.

The firing left the Kandahar governor, the police chief and the local intelligence head dead while General Scott Miller remained unhurt.

“Pakistan strongly condemns the terrorist attack reportedly resulting in the sad demise of senior Kandahar security officials and causing injuries to many others,” the Foreign Office Spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal in a statement issued in Islamabad.

Dr Faisal said that Pakistan stands with the Afghan government and the people and reiterates its support for the Afghan democratic process.

“We hope that the Parliamentary elections due to take place the day after tomorrow would be held peacefully. Strengthening of democracy is key to long term peace and security in Afghanistan,” he said.

“We also express our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives and pray for swift recovery of the injured.”
