PoliticsPPP strongly believes in proactive, independent media: Nafisa Shah

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Central Information Secretary Dr Nafisa Shah on Tuesday said her party strongly believed in proactive and independent media.

In an interactive session held with senior journalists in Islamabad in which the PPP’s Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari and the PPP’s Punjab Information Secretary Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar were also present, Nafisa Shah hailed the role of media in restoration of democracy in Pakistan.

Dr Nafisa Shah assured journalists that she would always remain accessible to them as prior to entering politics, she also began her professional career as a journalist in Karachi-based political magazine Newsline.

It is worth mentioning here that hailing from Sindh’s Khairpur district, journalist-turned-politician Nafisa Shah did her doctorate in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Oxford. She also served as Khairpur Nazim from 2001 to 2007. Now since 2008, Nafisa Shah has consecutively been the member of the National Assembly on women’s reserved seat from PPP’s platform.

In his remarks at the interactive session, Nayyar Bukhari said general elections were coming and political parties were in phase of interaction but PPP never lost interactive sessions with common people and media.

Nayyar Bukhari said if institutions would encroach other institutions then problems would start.

The PPP’s secretary general also paid a rich tribute to late Asma Jahangir, and said she was a symbol of resistance against dictatorship, oppression and tyranny.

Meanwhile, one minute silence was also observed and Fateha was offered for Asma Jahangir.

Moscow says it won’t allow US to silence UNSC on Israeli violence against Palestinians Monitoring Desk: Russian envoy in United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said that the UN Security Council should bring peace, stability and prosperity to the Middle East and Russia would not allow United States to silence UNSC over the issue of Gaza crisis. According to TASS news Agency, Nebenzya said that Moscow will continue to call for an end to violence against Palestinians and will not allow the US to muzzle the UN Security Council as Washington seeks to support Israel's operation in Gaza. "We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation. We will not allow the Americans to gag the entire council with their hands in an effort to encourage further continuation of Israel's ruthless operation," he said in a speech at the Security Council.
