ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan on Saturday offered condolences over loss of lives and damages caused by a massive earthquake in Mexico.

The 8.2-magnitude earthquake, the strongest ever hit the region in last 100 years, caused at least 61 deaths and injuries to 200 people in Mexican States including Tabasco, Oaxaca and Chiapas.

“The Government and people of Pakistan express their deepest sympathies over the precious lives lost due to the powerful earthquake registered at the southern coast of Mexico,” said a statement issued by the Foreign Office in Islamabad.

“We stand with the people of Mexico in their hour of grief and pray for speedy recovery of the injured,” the statement further said.

The earthquake had struck the Southern Coast of Mexico on Thursday, and completely destroyed over 420 houses as well as damaged nearly 2,000 houses.

Following the earthquake, around 20 aftershocks were also recorded, causing panic among people who fled their houses and thronged streets.

The earthquake also plunged many Cities into darkness as electricity was cut, and many Schools were forced to shut down.
