ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The National Assembly was informed on Wednesday that the federal government had started work for construction of seven dams to fulfill the demand of water and power which would be completed till 2018.              

Replying to a question in the Lower House during question hours, the Parliamentary Secretary Chaudhry Jaffar Iqbal said that a total of 173 Kundas cases found for stealing electricity in district Swat during the tenure of present government.

The Parliamentary Secretary said that an amount of Rs 4.49 million had been recovered under the head of theft adding that FIR’s had also been registered against electricity thieves. The total amount of line losses in this regard was Rs 0.44 million, he added.

Replying to a question, he said that currently Pakistan was importing 74 MW from Iran which would be enhanced till 104 MW in one month with the addition of 40 MW adding Quetta Electric Supply Company would start taking additional power soon.

Sahiwal power project, the Parliamentary Secretary said would be starting producing electricity of 1320 MW in the current year adding that the government was also working on the electricity project of 100 MW in Gwadar.

Replying to another question he said that a Quality and Safety Management System (QSMS) was being developed in the Distribution Companies (DISCOS) to eliminate losses of general public and line staff due to electric hazards.

Jaffar said that load-shedding had been reduced since 2013 and the production had been increased adding that it would be ended in the tenure of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government.

It was the policy of the government, to focus on the completion of short term projects which could be completed in two and half years, he added.
