LAHORE, Pakistan: The Lahore High Court (LHC) was informed on Wednesday that no death took place in Punjab due to swine flu.

The fact was stated in a written reply submitted by Provincial Health Department before Justice Muhammad Khalid Mehmood Khan who was hearing a civil miscellaneous application filed by Judicial Activism Panel regarding steps taken to prevent swine flu.

The health department submitted that swine flu was transmitted from pig and it was not present in Pakistan. However, currently H1N1 (Influenza Virus) strain of influenza virus was circulating and it was confirmed by National Institute of Health, it added.

The department further submitted that although deaths were reported but those were caused by influenza virus which would be eliminated by end of February.

The court was further apprised through reply that the government had launched awareness campaign and masses were asked to take precautionary measures, adding that isolation rooms were set up for the patients in hospitals and other steps were also being taken for the purpose. It was also stated that Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has approved Rs 60 million for treatment of H1N1 cases.

The court adjourned further hearing of the matter till February 4.

The petitioner-firm through its application submitted that several citizens have fallen prey to the disease whereas dozens are under-treatment in the hospitals.

The petitioner also stated that neither better facilities are being provided nor accurate toll is being told by the government.
