ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: More than 20 million people in Pakistan are suffering from Diabetes according to Dr Shah Nazir as the World Diabetes Day is being observed on Saturday (November 14) to raise awareness about diabetes and its complications.

Meanwhile, the medical experts have said that Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in Pakistan, and have called for collaborative efforts among diabetic patients, healthcare professionals and healthcare policymakers.

The experts said that Pakistan is one of the 10 countries in the world with the highest prevalence of diabetes and one the fastest increases in the number of diabetics. They said that approximately 88,000 people die annually in Pakistan due to diabetes out of which 35,615 were man and 52,397 women.

The World Diabetes Day aims to increase awareness of the effects of diabetes and its complications amongst the general population and professionals in a range of sectors. It is also hoped that the increased awareness would lead to more resources to fight the causes of diabetes.

The day was introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to the alarming rise of diabetes around the world.

The WHO estimates that more than 220 million people worldwide have diabetes. This number is likely to more than double by 2030 without intervention.
