28 killed, 287 injured in Ukraine clashes: ministry

KIEV: As many as 28 people have been killed and 287 others have injured during this week’s violence in Ukraine, the country’s health ministry on Thursday.

The ministry said that those injured in the deadly clashes between police and anti-government protesters also include some 88 law enforcement agents, six journalists, four foreigners and one member of the parliament.

The deadly clashes broke out in the Independence Square of Ukraine’s capital Kiev on Tuesday night between thousands of pro-EU protesters and hundreds of riot police after the deadline set by security authorities to end the protests expired.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych announced a truce after talks with the opposition after a meeting with three top anti-government lawmakers on Wednesday night in a bid to end months of turmoil in the country.

However, the violence broke out once again on Thursday morning in Kiev’s Independence Square in spite of the day of mourning that had been declared as a mark of respect for the 28 people who have died in the unrest.

The protesters hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails at the police, while according to reports dozens more were injured in the escalating violence.
