ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has approved resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Fakhruddin G Ibrahim.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the President approved Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation on August 12.

The Secretary of Election Commission, Ishtiaq Ahmad, has mailed a letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chauhdry for appointment of a new Chief Election Commissioner.

Under Article-217, post of the Chief Election Commissioner cannot be left vacant and a new CEC should be appointed before upcoming by-polls, stated Secretary of the Election Commission in his letter mailed to the Chief Justice.

Ishtiaq Ahmad has told that the Chief Justice can appoint any senior judge as caretaker Chief Election Commissioner.
