United Nations General Assembly has “demanded” that all countries comply with Security Council resolutions regarding the status of Jerusalem”.
Israel, Guatemala, Honduras, Togo, the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru and Palau voted in favour of United States. Britain, France, Germany and Japan voted for the resolution, while Australia and Canada were among 35 countries which abstained the voting.
Russian media called voting out of US as “shameful defeat” in UNGA as Ukraine also voted against US although Kiev is considered as “reliable friend” by Washington.
General Assembly expressed “deep regret” over recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem and stressed that the Holy City “is a final status issue to be resolved through negotiations in line with relevant UN resolutions.”
The General Assembly resolution directed the world to “refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions of Israel in Holy City of Jerusalem which was occupied by Israel in 1967.
The General Assembly further affirmed that “any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council.”
