NAIROBI: A massive fire erupted at the Nairobi’s Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday and forced the closure of East Africa’s largest airport causing extensive damage and a potentially huge toll on Kenya’s tourism and commerce.

The fire broke out shortly before dawn on Wednesday, forcing flights to be diverted to other airports.

“There is a serious fire at JKIA (Jomo Kenyatta International Airport), but we are doing everything possible to avert a crisis,” Mutea Iringo, a senior official with the country’s interior and national coordination ministry said in a statement.

No reports of casualties have been made yet.

The airport will be closed indefinitely, the interior ministry tweeted. No flights were departing or arriving, and some flights were being diverted to other airports.
