The reformist Masoud Pezeshkian has been elected Iran’s next President by securing 53.7 percent of the votes held after President Ebrahim Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash in May 2024.
“By gaining majority of the votes cast on Friday, Pezeshkian has become Iran’s next president,” the Iranian interior ministry said on Saturday.
In a post on X on Saturday, Iran’s president-elect Masoud Pezeshkian vowed to extend his hand to all Iranians in his first remarks after being declared the winner of a run-off against hardline rival Saeed Jalili.
“The difficult path ahead will not be smooth except with your companionship, empathy, and trust. I extend my hand to you,” he said, echoing an earlier promise to “extend the hand of friendship to everyone” if he won.
Meanwhile, President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari has felicitated Masoud Pezeshkian on his election as the Iranian president.
