BAKU: Ilham Aliyev has become the Azerbaijan’s President for a third term after he won polls held today (Wednesday) by securing nearly 84 percent of the vote.
His victory has extended the rule of the Aliyev dynasty which has held the presidency for two decades in the oil-rich Caspian Sea nation allied with the West.
Jamil Hasanli, the main opposition candidate, took about eight percent of the vote followed by eight other contenders.
Earlier in the day, Hasanli told reporters that his supporters had recorded numerous vote violations. “We have registered cases of ballot stuffing at a number of polling stations.”
“Regrettably, many government officials are involved in falsification, becoming accomplices of a grave crime,” he added.
