LONDON: Boris Johnson will lead the United Kingdom as its Prime Minister from Wednesday, replacing Theresa May who left the Office in June 2019 over her failure to seal a Brexit deal.
The 55-year-old Boris Johnson was elected as the new Conservative leader today in a ballot of party members. He defeated Jeremy Hunt comfortably, winning 92,153 votes to his rival’s 46,656.
Meanwhile, the former British Prime Minister Theresa May felicitated Boris Johnson on his successful election as the leader of the Conservative Party.
“We now need to work together to deliver a Brexit that works for the whole UK and to keep Jeremy Corbyn out of government. You will have my full support from the back benches,” she said.

The US President Donald Trump also posted a congratulatory tweet for the new UK prime minister saying “Congratulations to Boris Johnson on becoming the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He will be great!”

The Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison also wrote on his twitter account “Congratulations to @BorisJohnson on his election as Leader of the Conservative Party in the UK. I look forward to working with him and catching up at the G7 next month.”

In his speech after his victory, Boris Johnson paid tribute to his rival Jeremy Hunt as well as his successor Theresa May, saying it had been “a privilege to serve in her cabinet”.
Boris Johnson promised the audience he would “deliver Brexit, unite the Country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn”, the Opposition Leader in the UK Parliament.
