EducationWorld Teachers Day: Architects of nation grumble over discriminatory treatment

The annual ‘World Teachers Day’ is being celebrated worldwide including in Pakistan on Thursday (October 5) with an aim to highlight the importance of architects of a nation, and their contributions in the society.

However like a few past years, teachers once again are set to mark the day in Pakistan with protests over discriminatory treatment.

In this regard, daily wage teachers of federal educational institutions will gather outside the National Press Club (NPC) in Islamabad today for the fifth consecutive year to mark ‘World Teachers Day’ as a ‘Black Day’.

The Young Teachers Association has demanded that as per the recommendations of Special Committee of Federal Cabinet, daily wage teachers be regularised and their three-month salaries be paid.

The association also threatened to boycott the classes in educational institutions if teachers are not regularized within a month.

The representatives of Young Teachers Association said in their declaration that since 2009, no recruitments of teachers took place in the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) due to daily wages employees. Therefore, they added, educational institutions are facing shortage of teachers now.

They said that the incumbent government has regularized 11,000 employees as per the recommendations of Special Committee; however, architects of young minds are being discriminated.

The Young Teachers Association’s representatives said that except teachers, contractual and daily wages employees in all ministries and subordinate departments have been regularized; however, hurdles are being created in the way of teachers’ regularization.
