World Press Freedom Day to be observed on May 3

ISLAMABAD: The World Press Freedom Day will be observed on Saturday (May 3) across the world including Pakistan to inform the people that freedom of the press and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights.

This year the theme of World Press Freedom Day 2014 is “Media Freedom for a Better Future: Shaping the post-2015 Development Agenda.”

The focus this year is also on three inter-related issues: the media’s importance in development; the safety of journalists and the rule of law; and the sustainability and integrity of journalism.

An international conference will be held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on May 5-6.

The United Nation General Assembly declared May 3 as the World Press Freedom Day in 1991 to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right of freedom of expression.
