EuropeUK, Ecuador fail to resolve deadlock over Julian Assange

LONDON: British Foreign Secretary William Hague and his Ecuadoran counterpart Ricardo Patino failed to resolve the deadlock over WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in talks on Monday, officials said, however they agreed to establish a working group to solve the year-long standoff.

There was “no breakthrough” on what to do about the Australian, who has been living at the Ecuadoran embassy in London for the past year in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden to face questioning for alleged sex crimes, the Foreign Office said in a statement.

“Ministers agreed that officials should establish a working group to find a diplomatic solution to the issue of Julian Assange, but no substantive progress was made,” it said.

Assange fled to the embassy nearly a year ago to avoid extradition to Sweden to face allegations of sexual assault and rape, which he denies.
