ABU DHABI, UAE: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday approved the first licence of its kind for self-driving vehicles to run on the Country’s roads, which was granted to the WeRide, a leading global autonomous driving technology company.

It was told by the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on Twitter.

The WeRide Company will test different types of autonomous vehicles that will redefine the future of mobility in the UAE.

Established in 2017 and headquartered in the Chinese City of Guangzhou, WeRide is a leading, commercial-stage global company that develops Level 4 autonomous driving technologies.

The Company “aims to develop safe and reliable driverless solutions to make mobility and transportation safer, more affordable, and accessible. WeRide is conducting autonomous driving R&D, tests and operation in over 26 Cities around the world,” the Company’s website says.UAE approves first licence for self-driving vehicles

In the meeting of the Council of Ministers at Al Watan Palace in Abu Dhabi presided over by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the national policy for electric vehicles was also approved, which includes building a national network for electric vehicle chargers, regulating the electric vehicle market, and stimulating related industries to ensure reduced emissions, energy consumption, and the preservation of the quality of roads that the UAE enjoys.
