BEUIRUT: At least 23 persons were killed and 146 others sustained injuries when two back to back explosions took place near the Iranian embassy in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday morning, security sources said.

The initial reports said that the Iranian cultural attaché was among the dead, however the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon confirmed that the attaché was injured, but alive.

The explosions damaged at least six buildings near the embassy situated in the southern part of the Lebanese capital, the sources said.

The sources said that the blasts were caused by a car bomb, denying earlier media claims that two rockets caused the blasts.
