Treason case: Musharraf's fate to be decided by court, says PM Nawaz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Saturday that it is for the court to decide whether the action of former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf on November 3, 2007 fell under the purview of the article 6 of the constitution.

Talking to a private television channel‚ the prime minister said that the case is before the court of law and it would not be appropriate to say something on it but putting aside merits of the case he would say the state of Pakistan and the Constitution are plaintiff in this case.

The prime minister said that if everyone is equal before the law then everyone should be held accountable. It has to be decided by the court if someone was innocent or not, he added.

Musharraf, who is currently admitted to a Rawalpindi’s military hospital for heart problem, is facing treason charges in a three-member special court under article 6 for suspending, subverting and abrogating the constitution, imposing an emergency in the country on November 3, 2007 and detaining judges of the superior courts.

It is the first time in Pakistan’s history that a former military ruler has been put on trial for treason
