Obituary: Tayyab Nisar Mir shall never die in tourism industry

By Burkhard Herbote

My first contact with Tayyab Mir is around 20 years ago, when we communicated about the tourism administration and tourism industry of Pakistan.
He was in charge for international promotion of tourism of the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation PTDC.

He has sent me much more and individually prepared documents I never received by another Pakistani government agency in charge of tourism.
When I have met Tayyab first time, few years later, at ITB (International Tourism Exchange in Berlin) my first impression was confirmed.
He really was a very qualified and competent “ambassador” representing the tourism sector of Pakistan. In fact, to me, he was the “Minister” of Tourism of all past governments.
All my other experiences with the Pakistan tourism administration were totally different. I have met several representatives of PTDC or the Ministry in charge of Tourism, which did not know why they have had their position. Unfortunately in the tourism administration and promotion divisions of the Pakistan government there seems to be lot of lazy and non-qualified people. Exceptions confirm the rule. Tayyeb was one of exceptions. He, and another one from the private sector of the Pakistan tourism industry were the only ones who helped me with information and updates of the Pakistani chapter of the World Tourism Directory, where I was the editor.

Tayyab was fighting against ignorance of the so called “higher level people”, and I have high respect for his unremitting efforts to promote tourism for Pakistan.
I sometimes had the feelings, he is the only one doing so.
Beside of his professionalism, he was a trustful person and one could rely on him.
The Pakistan government could be proud of him.
They lost a real great man!
To say we were friends is not correct. We did not meet that often, but we were connected over the years, finally also by Facebook and both have sent a signal of living from time to time.
This signal now will not come any more.
Tayyab passed away suddenly and unexpected because of a sickness he suffered about 2 years.
May his soul rest in peace. All best wishes to his family and friends
