SocialWould-be rapist caught within an hour through iPhone app

LONDON: Police arrested a would-be rapist in less than an hour through a tracing device on the victim’s stolen iPhone in South East London.

According to reports, a 30-year-old entered a house in Forest Hill, South East London and attempted to rape a sleeping woman.

But as the woman in her 20s woke up and found him with his arms around her neck, she resisted and started screaming, alerting a neighbour. Upon her screaming, the man fled the house with her two mobiles, iPhone and a Blackberry.

Later, she immediately called the police which triggered her Find My iPhone app and arrested the man in Brixton accused of attempted rape and burglary.

“This was a frightening attack on a woman in her room as she slept, Det Chief Insp Pete Thomas, of the Met’s Sapphire South East which deals with sex offences, said.

“It appears the victim was deliberately targeted as the ground floor window had been left open for ventilation on what was a very warm night.

“The victim showed remarkable bravery in confronting the suspect, causing him to run away and was able to immediately call the police.

“Quick thinking officers from Lewisham activated the tracker on the phone to trace the man believed to be responsible for subjecting the victim to such a horrendous ordeal and Lambeth officers sought to quickly trace him in Brixton.”

He added: “The victim, who had been asleep, woke to find the male with his hands around her neck. He threatened to assault the victim and then attempted to sexual assault her, but a struggle ensued.

“Fearing for her life the woman screamed out, which alerted a neighbour. The suspect fled the scene stealing the victim’s iPhone and a Blackberry.

“Officers attended the scene and established the victim had installed the ‘Find my iPhone’ app. This was immediately activated and the phone was quickly tracked to the suspect in Brixton.

“Police attended and found the man still in possession of the two stolen phones. He was arrested at around 5.55am on suspicion of attempted rape and robbery and taken to a south London police station.”

"We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation.
