WASHINGTON: The United States will close a number of its embassies and consulates around the world due to security concerns on August 4 (Sunday), the State Department said.
“The Department of State has instructed certain US embassies and consulates to remain closed or to suspend operations on Sunday, August 4,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said.
Harf said that the decision was taken “out of an abundance of caution and care for our employees and others who may be visiting our installations.”
The spokeswoman did not tell how many facilities would close or in what region. She added that the missions may remain closed for additional days.
The US official also did not tell what threat has led the State Department to adopt such a measure.
