LHC orders to hold LB polls in Punjab on party basis

Elections 2013LHC orders to hold LB polls in Punjab on party basis

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday ordered the Punjab government to hold local bodies elections across the province on party basis, however the court accepted the Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N)-led provincial government’s right of delimitation of constituencies.

A two-member bench of the LHC comprising Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Farrukh Irfan Khan announced the verdict in response to a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League- Quaid (PML-Q) and Majlis Wahadat-e-Muslimeen challenging the law of holding the local government election on non party basis.

In the order, the LHC stated that Local Government Act 2013 section 18 was against basic human rights. According to the order, it is the provincial government’s authority to decide delimitations of local bodies.
