Federal govt asks PEMRA to stop BOL's transmission

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Federal government has asked the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to stop transmission of BOL TV Network till an investigation into Axact fake degrees scam is completed.

Talking to media on Thursday, the Federal Information Secretary Muhammad Azam told that a letter has been written in this regard by the information ministry to the PEMRA.

It comes when the Karachi-based Software Company Axact, the owner of BOL Television Channel, is being interrogated for its alleged involvement in selling fake degrees online.

The Axact Chairman and CEO Shoaib Ahmad Shaikh has announced to officially launch BOL TV on first day of Ramadan. However, the media group has begun its test transmission from May 21.

The Axact Chairman and CEO and its other top officials are currently in the custody of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for investigation, ordered by the Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

It all began when the New York Times (NYT) in its report titled “Fake Diplomas, Real Cash: Pakistani Company Axact Reaps Millions” claimed that Axact allegedly earned millions of dollars from scams involving fake degrees, non-existent online universities and manipulation of customers.

The report was published on May 17 while it was authored by the NYT Pakistan Bureau Chief Declan Walsh.
