BANGKOK: In an attempt to support Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra who is under immense pressure as anti-government protesters are holding protest rallies since last month to oust her from power, thousands of pro-government protesters took to the streets of the Thai capital on Saturday.

Over a dozen thousand red shirts supporters gathered in Bangkok’s Rajamangala stadium on Saturday and staged a rally to protect democracy. They chanted pro-government slogan and waved banners in solidarity with Shinawatra.

Meanwhile, anti-government activists continued their protest rallies and attempted to force entry into the Government House in Bangkok.

The anti-government protesters also attacked a bus with stones and other plastic chairs near a pro-government rally.

The protest rallies by anti-government protesters began last month after the government had brought an amnesty bill which would have paved the way for the former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, the brother of incumbent PM Shinawatras, to return to the country without facing any trial.

In response to the strong opposition to the bill, the government dropped the bill but opposition protesters continued their protest rallies demanding Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatras to step down and also claimed that Shinawatra’s government is controlled by her brother.
