Thailand’s interim premier calls for election on August 3

BANGKOK: In a bid to end the political turmoil in Thailand, the country’s interim Prime Minister Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan has called for fresh election to be held on August 3.

His statement came after the Thai army declared martial law across the country, saying that the action was taken to ensure peace and order after six months of violent political unrest.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Thailand’s interim premier said that the government had written to the Thai Election Commission proposing the new date for polls and hoped to submit a royal decree next week for the king to endorse a new national vote.
