Boston Marathon Explosions

Boston: Manhunt has started in Boston and authorities are checking all possible links of foreigners living in town, particularly young foreigners. One foreigner (identification is withheld by FBI) , who is badly burned and was participating in the marathon is under investigation. he is United States on a student visa and is considered a person of interest and possible suspect in the case but has not been formally charged or arrested.

Media reports indicate that  this foreigner is a Saudi Arabian national.

On the other hand, an apartment in Revere, Mass. is currently swarming with police. An unnamed law enforcement source told WFXT-TV that the heavy police presence is related Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings.

The source said police pulled over a suspicious driver who drove past the State Police barracks a number of times after the bombings. The driver reportedly was displaying a “nervous demeanor.”

Police, along with the FBI, then followed the driver to an apartment building in Revere located around Ocean Avenue and Beach Street, WFXT-TV reports.

“It was not immediately known what police were searching for at the home. Three people died and more than 100 were injured after bombs went off within 100 yards of each other near the finish line of the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon,” the report adds.

WBZ-TV reported late Monday that law enforcement officers were searching an apartment in the Boston suburb of Revere. Massachusetts State Police confirmed that a search warrant related to the investigation into the explosions was served Monday night in Revere but provided no further details.

Police said three people were killed. An 8-year-old boy was among the dead, according to a person who talked to a friend of the family and spoke on condition of anonymity. The person said the boy’s mother and sister were also injured as they waited for his father to finish the race.

Hospitals reported at least 144 people injured, at least 17 of them critically. The victims’ injuries included broken bones, shrapnel wounds and ruptured eardrums.

Additionally, CNN’s Peter Bergen said “first reports are often erroneous” but added he would be looking into what type of bomb was used to determine who might be behind the suspected attack.

“If it was hydrogen peroxide, this is sort of a signature of al-Qaeda. If it was more conventional explosives, which are much harder to get a hold of now, that might be another kind of right-wing extremism,” he said.

While Bergen does suggest that radical Islamic terrorism could be behind the attack, he singles out “right-wing extremism” as a possibility without speculating that left-wing extremist groups like Occupy Wall Street could be behind the explosions. He does not, however, explicitly blame “right-wing extremism.”
