Two militants awarded death penalties for Ahmadi worship places attacks

LAHORE, Pakistan: An anti-terrorism court in Lahore (ATC) on Saturday sentenced two militants to death after they were found guilty of being involved in terror attacks on two Ahmadi worship places in Lahore in 2010.

A single-bench of the court at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail awarded death penalties to Abdullah and Moavia affiliated with the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The ATC awarded death sentence to Abdullah on nine counts whereas Moavia was given the death penalty along with a fine of Rs3.3 million.

At last 95 persons were killed while 108 others sustained injuries when two Ahmadi worship places were attacked by militants in Lahore’s Model Town and Garhi Shahu areas on May 28, 2010. The Punjabi Taliban, a local affiliate of the TTP, claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Earlier on Tuesday, an ATC in Multan awarded death penalties to four militants for their involvement in an attack on an Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) office in 2009.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a moratorium on executions of death row prisoners in the country on December 17, a day after the army public school in Peshawar was hit by a deadly terror attack that left 150 persons mostly children dead.

Since the removal of ban on the death penalty, 20 death row convicts have so far been executed in different jails across the country.
