ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Two more condemned prisoners were hanged to death in Balochistan and Punjab jails on Wednesday morning.

The execution of a death row convict Amir Hamza was carried out in Balochistan’s Machh jail on the directives of an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Sibi.

The ATC had awarded death penalty to Hamza in 2004 for his involvement in the murder of a man over a minor dispute in 1995.

Similarly, another convicted murderer Sikander was also hanged in Bahawalpur’s central jail on Wednesday morning.

A total of 69 condemned prisoners have been executed across the country since December 17 last year when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a six-year moratorium on the death penalty in the wake of a Taliban attack at the army-run school in Peshawar.

The deadly attack which triggered strong worldwide condemnation left over 130 innocent children dead.

Initially, executions were resumed for terrorism offences only but later on March 10, 2015 the moratorium on the death penalty in all capital cases was lifted.

However, the United Nations, the European Union, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have urged the Pakistan government to re-impose the moratorium on the death penalty.
