Middle EastThursday's Damascus bombings: death toll rises to 90

BEIRUT: At least ninety people have died in a series of bombings that rocked Damascus on Thursday, making it one of the bloodiest days in the Syrian capital since the outbreak of a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad nearly two years ago.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday that at least 60 people have been killed in a powerful car bomb blast that occurred on Thursday in the Mazraa district of central Damascus, near the Russian Embassy and the headquarters of the nation’s ruling Ba’ath party.

Most of the victims are said to be civilians, including many children from a nearby school, with 17 of the dead reported to be members of the security forces.

On Thursday, three other coordinated bombings also took place in the north-eastern district of Barzeh, home to the nation’s security headquarters, claiming scores of lives mostly of soldiers.
