Middle EastSuicide car bombing hits Yemen's defence ministry; 20 killed, dozens injured

ADEN: A least 20 persons were killed and dozens others sustained injuries when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden car at the Defense Ministry in Yemen’s capital Sanaa on Thursday, the security sources said.

Following the bombing, armed clashes erupted between militants wearing military uniforms and security forces within the ministry compound.

In a statement, the Yemeni Defence Ministry said that the attack occurred shortly after working hours when an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into the gates of the defense ministry compound, located in the old district of the Yemini capital Sanaa.

The ministry said that the bomber targeted the hospital within the ministry compound. The hospital was badly damaged in the attack, the ministry said, adding that the situation is now under control.

On the other hand, according to media reports, security forces were still engaged in a gunfight with militants who arrived in a second vehicle and open fire on the compound. The attackers were reportedly dressed in military uniforms.
