KABUL: At least seven persons were killed after a suicide bomber targeting a village police commander blew himself up in a bazaar in a lawless part of eastern Afghanistan on Saturday, an Afghan official said.

“We think that the target of the attack was commander Dawlat Khan, who was martyred along with three of his bodyguards, and three civilians in this attack,” deputy provincial police chief Asadullah Insafi said. The blast hit a busy marketplace in Ghazni’s Qarabagh district late Friday, he said.

On Saturday, the governor of Samangan province in northern Afghanistan survived a roadside bomb attack.

“The governor of Samangan province (Khairullah Anosh) was heading to his office in his pick-up truck in Aibak city. Along the way his vehicle hit a roadside bomb,” Sediq Aziz, the governor’s spokesman, said.

“As a result of the attack, the governor along with his two bodyguards were slightly wounded,” Aziz said.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.
