PakistanPresident Zardari expresses anger over police’s role in Karachi

KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday expressed his extreme displeasure on the police officers’ role that turned out to be failure in maintaining law and order in Karachi, and ordered immediate action against terrorists in the aftermath of deadly Abbas Town blast, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported.

A massive blast ripped through the city’s Shia-dominated neighbourhood of Abbas Town on Sunday evening that left more than 50 people, many women and children among them, and over 200 injured.

The President, while presiding over a high level security meeting at the Chief Minister House, expressed outrage to top level police officials and asked them to resign and go “home” if they were unable to maintain peace in the metropolis.

The meeting was also attended by Governor Sindh Dr. Ishratul Ibad Khan, Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik and high officials of police and security agencies.

During the meeting, the president Zardari directed Interior Minister Rehman Malik to extend every possible help and provide all available resources to the provincial government for restoring peace in the city.

While the president also directed the CM to personally monitor the law and order situation in Sindh and sack the ‘nonproductive’ officers from police and other departments.

Moreover, the President ordered Sindh government to build apartments for the families of Abbas Town victims, adding that the government has purchased land for this purpose and the distribution of flats would be started from Saturday.

The President also authorized law enforcement agencies to carry out indiscriminate operation wherever required. They said police has been given one week to gear up for a decisive action in restive parts of Karachi.
