Murder convict executed in Kot Lakhpat jail

LAHORE, Pakistan: A murder convict was hanged till death in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail on Saturday morning.

The condemned prisoner Ahmad Khan was executed after he had been found guilty of murdering a person after kidnapping.

More than 100 executions have been carried out in Pakistan since a moratorium on executions was lifted in December last year.

Initially executions were resumed for terrorism offences only in the wake of a Taliban massacre at an army-run school in Peshawar which had claimed lives of more than 150 persons, mostly schoolchildren on December 16, 2014.

Later, the federal government completely reinstated capital punishment for all offences that entail the death penalty.

However, the United Nations, the European Union, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have called on Pakistan to re-impose its moratorium on the death penalty.
